Excretion Flashcards
What is the bladder
What does it hold
The bladder holds urine before excretion
What is the Bowman’s capsule
What happens here
The Bowman’s capsule is the cup shaped structure at the start of a nephron
Ultrafiltration happens here
What is ADH (antidiuretic hormone)
ADH is the hormone which regulates water content in the blood by changing the permeability of the collecting duct of the nephrons
What is a collecting duct
It is the tube at the end of a nephron where additional water is reabsorbed from the urine
What is osmoregulation
Osmoregulation is the regulation of the concentration of water in the blood
What is ultrafiltration
Ultrafiltration is filtration on a molecular scale. It happens on between the glomerulus and the Bowman’s capsule
What is urine
Urine is the liquid waste from the body
Contains water, urea and salts
What is the Ureters
Ureters are tubes which connect the kidneys to the bladder. Urethra connects bladder to the outside of body
What is selective reabsorption
Selective reabsorption is the reabsorption of more of some substance than another substance e.g. More water than salts
What is a nephron
Where is it located
A nephron is a tiny kidney tubule where ultrafiltration and reabsorption happens to make urine
Kidney
What is the loop of Henlé
The loop of Henlé is the large loop on the nephron
What is e hypothalamus
The hypothalamus is the part of the brain which monitors water content levels
What is the Convoluted tubules
The convoluted tubules are two sections of the NEPHRON closely associated with a capillary;
selective reabsorption of glucose takes place in the proximal convoluted tubule
What is Glomerular filtrate
Glomerular filtrate is the liquid in the Bowman’s capsule produced by ultrafiltration
Wha is the Glomerulus
The glomerulus is a small knot of capillaries associated with a Bowman’s capsule
