Gas Exchange Flashcards
What is inhalation
Breathing in
What is exhalation
Breathing out
What is the diaphragm
What does it do
The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle and tendon at the bottom of the lung
Is controls breathing
What are Alveoli
Alveoli are tiny bulges of air sacs in the lungs, gasses diffuse here between the blood and the lungs
What are Bronchioles
Bronchioles are tiny tubes in the lung which carry air to the alveoli
What does carcinogenic mean
Carcinogenic means something that causes cancer, which is the uncontrollable division of cells.
What is the compensation point
The compensation point is when the rate of photosynthesis and respiration in a plant are equal so there is no net production or uptake of gas
What is the trachea
The trachea is the tube leading from the mouth to the Bronchi, sometimes called the windpipe
What are the Bronchi
The Bronchi are the division of the Trachea(tube from mouth to bronchi) as it joins the lung
What are the intercostal muscles
The intercostal muscles are the muscles between the ribs which control breathing
What is the respiration system
The respiration system is the body system that includes the lungs, diaphragm and other organs involved in breathing
What is the thorax
The thorax is the centre part of the body protected by the ribs, it contains the lungs and the heart
What are the plural membranes
The plural membranes are the two membranes surrounding the lungs
What form of movement is most common in gas exchange
Diffusion
