Transcription Flashcards
What is gene expression and what is it split into?
The way DNA controls characteristics is through protein synthesis.
Which is also called gene expression.
Transcription and translation and it involves RNA
What is the purpose of transcription and translation?
These processes work together to create a polypeptide which folds to make a functional protein. Proteins carry many essential functions in cells
What is transcription?
the process by which an RNA sequence is produced from a DNA template
What is messenger rna?
A transcript copy of a gene used to encode a polypeptide
What is transfer rna?
A clover leaf shaped sequence that carries an amino acid
What is ribosomal rna?
A primary component of ribosomes
Transcription model answer
a. DNA strands are separated by breaking hydrogen bonds
b. Transcription is the synthesis of an mRNA copy of a gene;
c. The copy is complementary to the DNA template/antisense strand;
d. RNA polymerase attaches to DNA
e. RNA nucleotides matched to exposed complementary bases;
f. Adjacent nucleotides are joined by a phosphodiester bond together to make a strand of mRNA;
g. mRNA molecule separates from DNA
h. Pre-mRNA is spliced to remove introns
i. Mature mRNA leaves the nucleus through nuclear pores
