Co Transport Flashcards
Does co transport require energy?
Yes ATP is needed
Co transport model answer
Na+ is actively pumped out of the cell into the blood by the sodium potassium pump (active transport)
This lowers the concentration of sodium in the epithelium cell creating a concentration gradient
Na+ moves into the cell from the lumen by facilitated diffusion and glucose/amino acids are co transported with it
Glucose/amino acids are then transported into the blood by facilitated diffusion
What would happen if there was a respiratory inhibitor? (Co transport)
Lack of respiration means no ATP which is needed for active transport. This means sodium cant be moved from the epithelium cell to the blood so no concentration gradient is created
We also can’t get sodium or glucose from the lumen so it has to stay there causing bowel issues as there is too much glucose
