Genetic Diversity Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic bottlenecking?
A
When a population is greatly reduced in size- this reduces the number of different alleles resulting in less genetic variation
2
Q
What is the founder effect?
A
When a handful of organisms start a new colony. There is a small number of individuals which means a low number of different alleles and low genetic diversity.
3
Q
Who does the founder effect impact the most?
A
Smaller populations as number of different alleles is small to begin with so there is a greater chance of them being lost and less frequent alleles
4
Q
What is genetic drift?
A
A change in a populations allele frequencies that occurs due to chance rather than selective pressures
