Classification Flashcards
What is phylogeny?
It shows the ancestry of groups and points of divergence from a common ancestor
Evolutionary history of
relationships between groups
of organisms
What are points of divergence?
They allow us to identify the last point two groups of organisms had a common ancestor and tell us when speciation has occured
What is the binomial naming system?
All organisms have 2 latin names
Genus and species
Developed by carl linnaeus
What are the taxon levels?
Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
What is a species?
A group of similar organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
What is a gene?
A section of dna that codes for a polypeptide
What is a phylogenetic group?
Classification based on evolutionary history of relationships between groups of organisms
What is a hierarchy?
Groups that are subdivided into smaller groups and do not overlap
What is taxonomy?
Classifying (sorting) living organisms, naming them and splitting into groups (taxa) based on the similarities and
differences between them
