Dna And Chromosomes Flashcards
What is a chromosome?
Long molecule of DNA (polynucleotide) coiled around histones
When are chromosomes visible?
When the cell is dividing- prophase onwards
How are chromosomes formed?
Dna is combined with histone proteins
Dna-histone complex is coiled
The coils fold to form loops
Loops coil and pack together to form the chromosome
Homologous chromosomes definition
• Chromosomes with the same shape & size with the same genes but different alleles
What are karotypes?
images of a whole set of chromosomes taken with a microscope.
Do prokaryotes have chromosomes? How?
In prokaryotic cells, DNA molecules are shorter, form a circle and are not associated with protein molecules
• Therefore, prokaryotes do not have chromosomes
