The Genetic Code Flashcards
What is a gene?
Section of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a polypeptide
What is an allele?
Alternative forms of a particular gene
What are the 4 features of the genetic code?
It is a triplet code
It is a degenerate code
It is a non-overlapping code
It is a universal code
What does triplet code mean?
3 bases = 1 amino acid
What dies degenerate code mean?
most amino acids are coded for by more than one triplet
What does non-overlapping code mean?
each base appears in only one triplet.
• Only read each base once
What does universal code mean?
it is the same in all known living things
What are exons?
Coding regions within a gene
What are introns?
Non coding regions within a gene
What are mini satellites?
base sequences between genes that are non-coding.
They are not transcribed
What is the genome?
The complete set of genes and non-coding DNA in a cell, including those in mitochondria and/or chloroplasts
What is a proteome?
The full range of proteins produced by the genome
What is splicing?
When introns are removed
