Tracheophytes Flashcards
what is the advantage of tracheophytes?
sue to pluming, forests can afford secondary growth, and to grow more inland
xylem vs phloem
xylem } transports water and dissolved nutrients
phloem } transports things that deal with photosynthesis
tracheo synapomorphies
sporophyte dominant
still alternation of generations
sporophyte and gametophyte live independently
Early tracheophytes
rhynophyte} Devonian period and doesn’t have roots
-> first diconomsly branching (single into two)
zostrophyllosida } first case of overtoping (one branch getting stronger)
trimerophyta } those other things, sporangia on lateral branches
types of leaves
microphylls } single vein of a leaf (not common)
Megaphylls } more complex vascular, higher SA for light, common leaf
Secondary growth
involves the cambium of the steam to get thicker and woodyer
morphology
Sporangium on the plant is like flower or cone
apical meristem helps grow the stem up
