Cynobacteria Flashcards
What’s so special about this bacteria?
jump started the 2ndary atmosphere
-> Only oxygenic photosynthetic bacteria!
Commonly found on (Cyanobacteria)
microbial mats
- > on the top layer
- > proteobacteria found on lower levels
Types of pigments in cyanobacteria
chlorophila a (green), carotinodes (orange), pgycyan (blue), allopylocyan (blue), phyleocythrin (red)
How many photosystems in cyno?
2!!! Unlike in unoxgentic photosynthetic bacteria, ‘cus it needs more energy to rip apart a water molecules
Movement? (Cyanobacteria)
Moves without flagella, in mostl freshwater environments
On the cell structure (Cyanobacteria)
photosynthesis occurs in the THYLOKOID MEMBRANE, in think sheets
- > has a vacuole like in plant cells
- > no Flagella
- > curcular DNA
Choococcales
Unicellular cyanobacteria, but can form colonies
- > eats away at limestone
- > hard to kill
- > toxic
Toxic cyanobacteria
Can occur when there is excess in N and P from agriculture plus perfect heat conditions
freshwater filamentous algee
Anabaena is a type of this (common toxic algee blooming one)
- > Long cells are akinete, like the storage house
- > hetocytes are anarobic and fix N, and really really hates o2
Prochlorococcus
Exists in saltwater, 80% of earth primary producers
How did we date this? (Cyanobacteria)
Using stromatolites fossils of mounds formed by early colonies
What pigments do they have?
CH a, phycocyanin, allophycocyanin, phycoerythrin, carodinoid
Anoxygenic photosynthisis
ex// the purlple purple protobacteria
- > uses SH2 for H+, less E needed so 1 reaction center
- > no O2 as byproduct
