byrophytes Flashcards
what is in the bryophytes?
Heptophyta (liverwarts), anthocartophyta (horn warts), Bryophyta (moss)
Paraphyletic
Synapomorphies of the bryophytes
gametophyte dominant, dioecious, no tracheids (small in size for diffusion), spores dispersed through the air, sporophyte lives off the gametophyte
types of heptophyta
jugermanniales (the leafy ones)or marchantials
The life cycle of marchanina (liverwort)
the cup moss type of thing,
the male gametophyte (flower thing) with antheridium
Female gametophyte (star shape) with archegonium
fertilizes the zygote and sporangium expands of vase
->sporophte grows off of it (releases spore into the winds)
-> can be asexual
— have gemma cups that fill with spores and it releases the spore once it fills up
Traits of moss or bryophytes
Doesn’t need much soil, needs humidity and mosture
LC of the common moss
name (polytrichum commence)
- > due to rain sperm falls onto archegonium, and the sporophyte is formed
- > when env is bad, shell breaks and microspores into env
LC of peat moss
the thing that makes bogs upon layers
-> low ph, can conserve dead bodys
