Bacteria Flashcards
type of DNA
Circular DNA cromosomes
-> contains extra DNA in PLASMIDS
Cell wall
made of peptidoglycan -> Amino acids and sugars
Many moves through a
flagellum that propels bacteria through a medium
Reproduces through
Binary fission (like mitosis), all cells are haploid -> Asexual reproduction
Transfers DNA to same generation through
Horizontal gene transfer
- > process called conjugation, where a puilus (conection tube) Forms and a plasmid is copied
- > commonly used to develop antibiotic resistance
Proteobacteria
is a phylum where all bacterial pathogens occur, but not all are pathogens
-> Some alow for Nitrogen fixation
Gram +’ve vs Gram -‘ve
based on the gram test that determines their type of cell wall
+‘ve -> Smooth thick wall of peptidoglycan
-‘ve -> Petopglycan wall sandwiched between porans, and is rougher (more resistant to antibiotics)
Actinomycetes
gram =’ve bacteria, crucial in soil systems
The life cycle of Myxobacteria
1) Cells living independently having fun (vegetative)
2) with stress in the ENV, the cells aggregate
3) aggregate in a mound
4) creates a fruited body
5) fruited bodies burst and release myxospores
6) cell’s “wake up” when conditions become good again and this life cycle circles
Metabolism of bacteria
Mostly producers or decomposers
