Topic 7 - Trophic Levels Flashcards
What are tropic levels?
Trophic levels are the different stages of a food chain, consisting of one or more organisms performing a specific role in the food chain
How are tropic levels named?
Trophic levels are named after their location in the food chain using numbers. First level is called Trophic level 1. Each level after that is numbered in order based on how far along the food chain the organisms are
What does tropic level 1 contain and what is it?
Producers - they are the organisms at the starting point of the food chain that make their own food by photosynthesis
What can be found in tropic levels 2-4?
2 - primary consumers
3 - secondary consumers
4 - tertiary consumers
What are primary consumers?
Herbivores that eat plants and algae (they only eat plant and algae)
What are secondary consumers?
Carnivores that eat the primary consumers
What are Tertiary consumers?
Carnivores that eat other carnivores
What are apex preditors?
Carnivores that have no predators and so are at the top of the food chain
How do decomposers break down plants and animals?
They do it by secreting enzymes that break the dead things down into small soluble food molecules that then diffuse into the microorganisms
