Topic 6 - More About Evolution Flashcards
Why did not everyone agree with Darwin’s theory?
- It went against common religious beliefs about how life on earth developed
- There was not enough evidence to convince scientists (not enough studies done)
- Darwin couldn’t explain why the new useful characteristics appeared or hoe they were passed on
What was Lamarck’s hypothesis about evolution?
Changes that an organism acquired over it’s lifetime are passed on to its offspring. If a characteristic is used a lot by an organism, it would become more developed during its lifetime, and the organism’s offspring would inherit the acquired characteristics
How can you fins out which hypothesis is right?
Finding evidence to support or disprove one
Why was Lamack’s hypothesis rejected?
Experiments didn’t support his hypothesis. If a hamster’s fur is dyed, it’s offspring don’t get the colour
Why was Darwin’s hypothesis accepted?
The discovery of genetics supported his idea by providing an explanation of how organisms born with beneficial characteristics can pass them on.
