B17.1 - Feeding Relationships (Finished) Flashcards
What do food chains start with?
A producer
What is a producer?
A producer is an organism that makes it’s own food (using energy from the sun)
What are producers usually?
Green plants and algae, making food from photosynthesis
What is biomass?
Biomass is the mass of living material
How is energy transferred through living organisms in an ecosystem?
Energy os transferred through living organisms in an ecosystem when organisms eat other organisms
What are consumers?
Consumers are organisms that eat other organisms
What is the names of the various organisms in food chains and which type eats what types? (Secondary, producer etc) (really bad wording)
Producers are eaten by primary consumers which are eaten by secondary consumers which are eaten by tertiary consumers
What are predators?
Predators are consumers that hunt and kill other animals
What are prey?
Prey is what predators eat
What is the limiting factor for the population of a species?
The amount of food available
Why do predator and pray populations go in cycles?
If prey population increases, there will be more food so predator population increases. But more predators eat more prey so their population decreases, and so there is less food so predator population decreases and so on
Why are predator-pray cycles out of phase with each other?
It takes a while for one population to respond to changes in another one
What do food chains show?
Food chains represent feeding relationships within a community
