Topic 6 - Variation Flashcards
What is variation?
Variation is slight differences within a species.
What two types of variation are there?
Genetic and environmental
What causes genetic variation?
An organism’s characteristics are determined by the genes inherited from its parents. Most animals get some genes from father and some from mother, the combining of which gives genetic variation
What is environmental variation?
The environment (conditions) an organism live sin causing differences between members of the same species
What are some examples of environmental variation?
- Plants growing in sunlight vs shade
- suntan
Most characteristics are determined by ____
A mixture or genetic and environmental factors
E.g. max height, genes may give max height but growth depends on environment
Mutations can result in a new ___ , introducing variation into a species
Phenotype
