Topic 6 - Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction is where genetic information from two organisms is combined to produce offspring which are genetically different to either parent
How many chromosomes are in human gametes?
23
How is offapring formed from 2 gametes?
The egg and sperm cell fuse together to form a cell with the full number of chromosones
Why is there variation in the offspring of sexual reproduction?
The offspring inherits features from both parents as it’s received a mixture of chromosomes. The mixture of genetic information produces variation
What do flowering plants use to reproduce sexually?
Pollen
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction where there is only one parent, so offspring are genetically identical to the parent
How does asexual reproduction happen?
It happens by mitosis, an ordinary cell makes a new cell by dividing in two. The new cell is called a clone and has exactly the same genetic information as the parent cell
