B11.1 - Principles Of Hormonal Control (Finished) Flashcards
What are hormones?
Chemical molecules released directly into blood
How are hormones transported?
They are carried in the blood, but only affect particular cells in the target organ
Where are hormones produced?
They are produced (and secreted) by glands, called endocrine glands
What is the difference between hormones and nerves?
Hormones have slower action and act in a less precise area but have long lasting effects. Unlike nerves that have fast action in a precise area but with short effects
What does the pancreas produce?
Produces insulin
What is insulin for?
Insulin is used for Regulating the blood glucose levels
What does the adrenal gland produce and what does the product do?
Produces adrenaline
- prepares the body for a fight or flight response
Which gland produces thyroxine?
The thyroid
What does thyroxine do?
Regulates things such as rate of metabolism, temperature
What do the ovaries produce?
Produce oestrogen
What does the testes produce and what does the product do?
Produces testosterone which controls puberty and sperm production
What does the pituitary gland produce?
The pituitary gland produces Many hormones that regulate body conditions
Why is the pituitary gland sometimes called the master gland?
The hormones it produces act on other glands causing them to secrete hormones bringing about change
What is the endocrine system made up of?
Glands that release hormones directly into the bloodstream
How does the target organ receive hormones?
It has receptors on the cell membrane that pick up the hormone molecules, triggering a response
