Topic 6 - DNA Flashcards
What is the structure of DNA?
It is a polymer. It’s made up of two strands coiled together in the shape of a double helix
Where is DNA found?
DNA is found in the nucleus of animal and plant cells in really long structures called chromosomes that usually come in pairs
What determines the inherited characteristics you have?
What is in your DNA
What is a gene?
A dream is a small section of DNA found on a chromosome
What do genes do?
Each gene codes for a particular sequence of amino acids which are put together to make a specific protein
How does DNA determine the cell type?
Genes tell cells in what order to put amino acids together and so determine what proteins the cell produces determining the cell type
What is a genome?
A genome is the entire set of genetic material of an organism
Why do scientists want to understand the human genome?
- Allows them to identify genes linked to disease
- Help understand inherited diseases and find treatments
- Trace migration if people
