Q

What are some examples of programmes done to maintain biodiversity and protect ecosystems?

Q

How do breeding programmes help keep biodiversity?

A

These prevent endangered species from becoming extinct. Animals are bread in captivity to make sure species survives if dies out in wild. Some can be released into wild to boost or re-establish population

Q

How would programmes to reintroduce hedgerows and field margins around fields on farms where only a single type of crop is grown help maintain biodiversity?

A

Field margins are areas around edges of fields where wild flowers and grasses are left to grow. These provide a habitat for a wider variety of organisms than could survive in a single crop habitat

Q

What are some conflicting pressures to maintaining biodiversity?

A
  • Protecting biodiversity costs money
  • Protecting biodiversity can come to a cost for local people’s lively hoods (less deforestation = unemployment)
  • Protecting biodiversity vs protecting food security
  • Development is important, however it can affect environments (land used up)
