B10.3 - Reflex Actions (Finished) Flashcards
What are reflexes?
Reflexes are rapid, automatic responses to certain stimuli that don’t involve the conscious part of the brain
Why are reflexes so fast?
They do not involve the conscious part of your brain, there is no thinking needed
Why are reflexes important?
They help you Avoid danger or harm as they are fast and take care of basic body functions (breathing)
What are relay neurones?
Neurones that connect a sensory and motor neurone in the CNS
What is the reflex arc?
Tge path an electric signal travels along to bring about a reflex (i think)
What are synapses?
A synapse is the connection between two neurones
What three neurones do reflex actions involve?
- Sensory neurones
- Motor neurones
- Relay neurones
How do electrical impulses cross synapses?
When an impulse reaches the end of a neurone it causes chemicals to be released. These will diffuse across the gap and attach to the receptor site of the next neurone to set off another impulse
What is the reflex pathway?
stimulus -> receptor - sensory neurone -> relay neurone -> motor neurone -> effector -> response
What is the main CNS for reflexes?
Spinal cord
What happens when the impulse reaches the effector organ?
It is stimulated to respond
Why do we know about reflex actions when we perform them?
An impulse also travels to the conscious areas of your brain so you know about it, but only after it has happened
Where is the CNC for neurones in a reflex arc?
It is the spinal cord or unconscious part of the brain
What neurone is found in the CNS?
Relay neurone
