- Bourgeoisie controls the Economic base (forces of production)
- This shapes the Superstructure (gov, media, family, education etc) because of their economic influence

- Ruling class maintains its position through ideas- hegemony
- Proletariat must develop a ‘counter-hegemony’ to gain control from Bourgeoisie
- W/C can only counter-hegemony by producing their own ‘organic intellectuals’ who are class conscious

i) Repressive state apparatus - police prison army
ii) Ideological state apparatus - education family religion media
- ISA maintains a state of false class consciousness & spreads bourgeois ideology
