Topic 6: classic design Flashcards
6.1 and 6.2
Timelessness
an object that is unaffected by the passage of time or changes in fashion
understanding the factors that make a design classic can inform the design of new, innovative products.
Form versus function
describes how the form or aesthetic of an object should derive directly from its function. The function of the object should be explicit and accessible
other factors, besides function, may indicate the form of an object:
design for disassembly
the form of the design allows it to be easily separated for disassembly and reuse
design for manufacture
the form of the design allows for it to be assembled effectively or economically
Form follows function
the shape and aesthetiuc of the design are determined by the function of the product
function follows form
the form of the design is prioritized over function
Retro-styling
seeks to use aesthetic elements of a classic design in a modern design. goal is to re-create emotional responses that the original design created in users
Ubiquitous/Omnipresent
A design that has existed/been in circulation for a long time and can be found almost everywhere
Dominant design
Embody the essential features, the majority of manufacturers and consumers recognize these features and may use them as a benchmark when evaluating other designs
Mass production
the production of large quantities of a standardized article by an automated mechanical process.
involves investment in systems and processes to produce a large number of designs
