fast & efficient –> saves time and costs
additive process (materia; is added/fused)
produces little to no waste
FDM
fused deposition modelling
3d printing technique that places melted layers of material (usually plastic) on a bed to build up a 3d model. filament is heated by a nozzle and then drawn on layer by layer
Adv: affordable, consumer grade tech, prints functional prototypes
disadv: slow
SLA
Stereolithography
creates 3d models layer by layer by hardening molecules of a liquid polymer (resin) using a laser beam
adv: functional prototypes, high resolution allows small objects, little cleaning up
disadv: high cost, some resins not ideal for functional prototypes
LOM
Laminated object manufacturing
a system that virtually slices a 3d cad model into thin layers, then cuts out each layer from a roll of material using a laser or plotter cutter. the layers can then be glued in the correct order to create the 3d model
adv: allows large parts to be made
SLS
Selective Laser sintering
additive manufacturing technique that uses a (CO2) laser to fuse small particles of a material into a mass that has the desired 3d shape. powder is laid down and burnt with laser. unburnt powder can be removed and reused.
adv: little waste, printing of metal alloys (only system capable), prints functional prototypes
disadv: high cost
