Topic 4.2A: Metals Flashcards
Grain size
Large/Coarse grains (slow cooling):
* Higher tensile strength, toughness, ductility
* malleable
Small grains (rapid cooling):
* Lower tensile strength, toughness, ductility
* higher brittleness
Alloy
mixture with at least 1 metal, can be a mixture with another metal or other non metal
Work hardening
processof toughening a material through plasticity deformation
Tempering
heat treating process to increase toughness of iron based metals by heating it and allowing it to cool in air. decreases hardness and brittleness and increases ductility
Super Alloys
metal alloys that exhibit excellent mechanical strength, resistance to corrosion, good surface stability and resistance to thermal creep deformation
Ferrous
contains iron, e.g Mild steel, Stainless steel, Cast iron
Non-Ferrous
doesn’t contain iron e.g. Aluminum, copper, silver, tin, zinc
Alloys
Brass: castings, marine and plumbing fittings (for its corrosion resistance)
High Speed Steel (HSS): cutting tools like drills and saw blades
