Topic 4—C: Diversity and Classification- 1. Classification of organisms Flashcards
what is phylogeny?
it’s the study of the evolutionary history of groups of organisms
what does phylogeny tell us?
who’s related to whom and how closely related they are
what is taxonomy?
- it’s the science of classification
- it involves naming organisms and organising them into groups
according to there evolutionary relationships
what is the 8 level taxa
domain
kingdom
phylum
class
order
family
Genus
species
they are arranged in hierarchy (largest- smallest)
there is no overlap so organisms can only belong to one group at each level in the hierarchy
species (definition)
organisms of the same species can reproduce to make fertile offspring
what happens when you move down the hierarchy?
there are more groups at each level but fewer organisms in each group
what is the binomial system?
all organisms are given one internationally accepted scientific name in latin that has 2 parts
