Topic 1---B: More biological molecules- 3. ATP Flashcards
1
Q
Why is energy important?
A
Plant and animal cells need energy for biological processes to occur
2
Q
What does ATP stand for?
A
Adenosine triphosphate
3
Q
What is ATP made from?
A
- Nucleotide base (adenine)
- Ribose sugar
- 3 phosphate groups
4
Q
What is used to make ATP?
A
The energy released from glucose
5
Q
What happens once ATP is made?
A
It diffuses to the parts of the cells that need energy
6
Q
Where is the energy in ATP stored and how is it released?
A
- It’s stored in high energy bonds between the phosphate groups
- It’s released via hydrolysis reactions
7
Q
When energy is needed by a cell, how is ATP broken down?
A
- ATP is broken down into ADP and inorganic phosphate (hydrolysis reaction)
- Phosphate bond is broken and energy is released.
- Reaction is catalysed by the enzyme ATP hydrolase.
8
Q
How can ATP be resynthesized?
A
- In a condensation reaction
- Between ADP and inorganic phosphate
- Happens during both respiration and photosynthesis
- Catalysed by the enzyme ATP synthase.
