Topic 25: Deuterostomia Flashcards
Clade Deutrostomia
A part a clade bilateria, phylum Echinodermata and phylum Chordata, shares deuterostome embryonic development.
Phylum Echniodermata
Starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers.
Characteristics of Echniodermata
Radial Symmetry (pentaradical), Sessile, the epidermis covers an endoskeleton of ossicles, has a water vascular system, diffuse nervous system w/o central brain, separate sexes.
Water Vascular System
A hydraulic system for locomotion and feeding that is derived from the coelom and consists of a ring canals, tube feet, and madreporite.
Asteroidea
Starfish w 5 or more arms, predatory by prying open molluscs w/ tube feet and evert stomach onto prey to engulf them.
Echniodea
Sea urchins w/ no arms, but 5 rows of tube feet, slow-moving herbivores that uses jointed ossicles for locomotion
Holothuroidea
Sea cucumbers w/ elongated body plan that lack spines.
Tube Feet
At the end of arms w/ ampulla and podium, used for suction
Madreporite
Allows water flow to provide equilibrium, not radially symmetrical.
