Topic 1: What is Biological Diversity? Flashcards
Biological Diversity
Refers to the variety of life on Earth, including animals, plants, fungi, and microorganism
Genetic Diversity
The genetic variation within a population and between populations of a single species
Species Diversity
The variety of species within a particular region
Ecosystem Diversity
The variety of different habitats within a region and their ecological interactions
Popualtion
A group of individuals of the same species that live in the same species that live in the same area, produce fertile offspring
Ecosystems
Where species live, connect and interact
Extant Species
Species with living members.
Provisioning Services
The products humans obtain from nature, food, raw material, medicine, energy, etc
Ecosystem Services
Regulating Services and Supporting Services
Regulating Services
The benefits humans receive beyond raw materials. Climate regulation, water and air purification, ect.
Supporting Services
Critical Biosphere viability. Oxygen production, CO2 absorption, etc.
Extinction
No living individuals of a species remains on Earth
Extirpation
When a species is no longer found in a specific geographic region but still exists elsewhere.
Endangered Species
Facing Imminent extinction
Threatened Species
Likely to become endangered if no action is taken.
Threats to Biodiversity
Habitat Loss
Invasive Species
Overexploitation
Global Climate Change
