Topic 22: Lophotrochozoa Flashcards
Phylum Acoela
Diverged before the emergence of the three bilateral clades. Basal Group. Small flattened body w/ no brain, no body cavity.
Clade Lophotrochozoa
Within Clade Bilateria, no unifying traits, based on molecular data. Some have lophophore feeding, others have trochophore larval stage.
Phylum Platyhelminthes
Flatworms w/ incomplete digestive tract and no circulatory system.
Phylum Platyhelminthes - Rhabditophora
Can be free-living or parasitic; FL - has cephalization, P - lives in other animals and life cycle involves two or more animals.
Intermediate Host
Asexual reproduction occurs
Definitive Host
Where the parasite sexually reproduces.
Important Rhabditophora
Trematodes and Tapeworms: absorb nutrients, has suckers and hooks.
Phylum Syndermata
Rotifers, which are free-living, microspopic animals, and acanthocephalans, which are specialized parasites in vertebrates.
Lophophorates
Have a lophophore: a fan of ciliated tentacles surrounding the mouth leading to a coelom.
Phylum Ectoprocta
Sessile animals that superficially resemble coral, encased in chitin and have u-shaped gut.
Phylum Brachiopods
Sessile animals that superficially resemble clams, suspension feeders.
Trochozoans
Exhibit motile trochophore larvae, includes segmented worms (annelida) and phylum mollusca.
Phylum Mollusca
Snails, slugs, oysters, clams, octopus, and squids. Soft-bodied animals with hard calcareous shell. unsegmented body plan with three parts
What are the 3 unsegmented parts of Mollusca?
Muscular ventral foot, Visceral mass (containing organs), and mantle (forms a shell).
Phylum Mollusca - Class Polyplacophora
Chitons that use their foot like a suction cup.
Phylum Mollusca - Gastropoda
Slugs and snail.
Phylum Mollusca - Bivalvia
Clams, oysters, and mussels.
Phylum Mollusca - Cephalopoda
Squids, octopus, cuttlefish.
Phylum Annelida
Segmented worms with a closed circulatory system and cephalization.
Phylum Annelida - Clade Errantians
Mobile, predatory with bristles made of chitin called Chaetae.
Phylum Annelida - Class Sedentarians
Sessile burrowers with reduced cephalization. Leeches and Earthworms.
Scolex
On the anterior end of tapeworms that had suckers/hooks for attachment.
Proglottids
The posterior end of tapeworms which contains sex organs.
Parapodia
Pair of paddle-like or ridge-like structures on each body segement.
