Topic 21: Clade Amniotes Flashcards
Amniotes
A group of tetrapods that include reptiles, birds, and mammals
3 Shared Derived Traits of Amniotes
Amniotic Egg, Internal Fertilization via Intromittent Organs, Direct Developement
Amniotic Egg Traits
Four embryonic layers: Amnion, Yolk Sac, Allantois, Chorion. Porous calcareous or leathery shell of embryo that’s layed on land.
Amnion
Protects the embryo from mechanical shock
Yolk-Sac
Contains yolk: a nutrient source
Allantois
Water disposal sac, and gas-exchange organ.
Chorion
O2/CO2 exchange from embryo to air across shell. Protects from desiccation.
Albumen
Provides nutrient to embryo.
Where do Amniotes lay their eggs?
On land.
Intromittent Organs
AN external genitalic organ of males that is specialized to deliver sperm during copulation and is characteristic of internal fertilization.
Adaptation for Terrestrial Life
Thick, impermeable skin = water retention. and Lungs powered by muscles.
What is classification based on?
The number of major openings in the skull.
Anapsids
Classified based on their lack of temporal fenestrae (Turtles)
Clade Synapsids
Based on their one pair of temporal fenestra (Mammals)
Clade Diapsids
Based on their two pairs of temporal fenestra behind their eye sockets (Reptiles)
Fenestra
A natural opening or window in a bone.
