Tissues other Flashcards
Tissue
A group of similar cells that function together to carry out specialised activities
What influences structure and function of tissue?
The material that surrounds the cells of the tissue and the connections between cells that form the tissue
Histology
The study of body tissues
Types of tissues
Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Nervous
Membrane
A flat sheet of pliable tissue that covers or lines part of the body
Epithelial membranes
Composed of an epithelial layer sitting on top of an underlining connective tissue layer
Types of epithelial membranes
Mucous
Serous
Cutaneous
Mucous membranes
Found lining cavities that open directly to the exterior e.g digestive, respiratory and reproductive tracts
Serous membranes
Found lining cavities that do not open directly to the exterior
Also cover organs that lie within that cavity
Parts of serous membranes
Parietal layer
Visceral layer
Serous fluid
Parietal layer
Attached to the wall of the cavity
Visceral layer
Attached to the wall of the organs
Serous fluid
Fills the space between the two layers of serous membranes
Cutaneous membrane
Covers the surface of the body
Composed of superficial epidermis and deeper dermis
Synovial membrane
Contain only a connective tissue layer (no epithelial layer)
Line the cavities of freely moving joints (diarthrosis)
Secretes synovial fluid into the joint cavities
