Cell Divisions Flashcards
Mitosis
cell division that produces two diploid cells (clones) for growth and regeneration
Interphase
Resting and growth period
Contains S phase where the cell doubles up on every chromosome through a process called DNA replication
DNA replication
DNA double helix uncoils DNA strands are separated momentarily from each other while enzymes DNA polymerase (enzyme) makes a copy of each strand of DNA by pairing complementary nucleotides to original strand Process produces a copy of the DNA double strand when the cells divide each daughter cell receives a copy
Phases of Mitosis
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Prophase
Chromatin condense into chromatids that can be seen under a light microscope
Metaphase
Chromatids are lined up in the middle of the cell
Anapahse
Chromatids are split into two halves (each now called a chromosome)
Halves are pulled to opposite ends of the cell
Telophase
Chromosomes uncoil back into threads of chromatin
A nuclear envelope encircles the chromatin
Cytokinesis
Where the cytoplasm divides after mitosis
Meiosis
Makes cells with half the number of chromosomes
Produce games
1 diploid cell splits into 4 haploid cells
Two phases
