Tissues 1-2 Flashcards
What do epithelial cells sit on, what what is this composed of ?
A basement membrane which is composed of two layers:
Basal lamina
Reticular lamina
What are three ways that epithelial cells connect ?
1: Gap junctions
2: Tight junctions
3: Desmosomes
What is the name of epithelia that is a mix of columnar and cuboidal ?
Pseudo-stratified columnar epithelium
When an epithelium is stratified what does this mean ?
Multiple layers of the same type of epithelium
What kind of epithelium is the liver comprised of ?
Epithelial hepatocytes arranged in rows/cords.
What kind of epithelium is the kidney comprised of ?
Epithelial cells organised into nephrons.
What are some of the consequences of abnormal function of covering and lining epithelium ?
Over-proliferation Under-proliferation Over secretion Under-secretion Loss of cilia
Define a gland
A collection of secretory epithelial cells
Define exocrine gland
Secretes into tubes
What are the two types of exocrine gland ?
Tubular
Acinar
Define endocrine gland
Secrete into blood.
What are the consequences of an abnormally functioning pituitary gland ?
Over production of growth hormone: Gigantism
Underproduction hormone: Dwarfism
What are the three types of connective tissue ?
Dense
Dense regular
Dense irregular
With regards to connective tissue what are fibres ?
Rope-like structures such as collagen and elastin
