TISSUE FLUID Flashcards

1
Q

what is tissue fluid

A

fluid that bathes cells and allows the exchange of substances between blood and cells
contains more glucose, fatty acids, salts and oxygen for cells
removes co2 and waste

Q

describe the formation of tissue fluid

A
  1. increased hydrostatic pressure caused by narrower capillaries compared to arterioles and the contraction of ventricles
  2. hydrostatic pressure resisted by:
hydrostatic pressure of tissue fluid on outside of capillaries
    lower water potential of blood
  3. overall pressure forces fluid and small molecules out of capillary. cells and large proteins are left in the blood
this is called ultrafiltration and occurs at the arteriole end

Q

describe the return of tissue fluid

A
  1. loss of fluid inside capillaries lowers hydrostatic pressure. hydrostatic pressure at venule end is higher outside the capillary so tissue fluid is forced back in
  2. osmotic forces from proteins in plasma pulls water back into the capillaries
  3. remaining tissue fluid enters lymph vessels and drains back into the veins near the heart

lymph contains lymphocytes

A

made in lymph nodes
filter out foreign matter from lymph
plays a role in immunity (WBC)
