BLOOD AND BLOOD VESSELS Flashcards
what do arteries do
carry blood away from the heart. all but one carry oxygenated blood
what do arterioles do
control blood flow from arteries to capillaries
what do capillaries do
link arterioles to venules and branch off from arteries to cells
what are venules
control blood flow from capillaries to veins
what are veins
carry blood to the heart
all but one carry deoxygenated blood
what does larger cross section area of vessels mean
greater friction against blood
so slower flow
describe arteries
thick muscular layer to control blood flow
thick elastic layer to maintain pressure]
stretches during systole
relaxes during diastole
no valves but 2 exceptions
describe arterioles
thicker muscular layer
thinner elastic layer
no valves
describe veins
thin muscle layer - carry blood back to the heart
thin elastic layer - lower pressure in them
valves to prevent backflow as veins have lower pressure
describe capillaries
no muscle
no elastic layer
no valves
highly branches do have a large surface area
narrow lumen - can penetrate tissue to reduce diffusion pathway
endothelial lining has spaces so WBCs can move into tissue
