CELL MEDIATED RESPONSES Flashcards
1
Q
what are the two types of WBCs
A
phagocytes (neutrophils and macrophages)
lymphocytes (T and B lymphocytes and memory cells)
2
Q
where do t lymphocytes mature
A
thymus gland
3
Q
what are the subgroups of T cells
A
helper t
cytotoxic t
4
Q
what do t lymphocytes recognise
A
antigens presented by macrophages
5
Q
describe the cell mediated response
A
- Phagocytosis & phagocyte presents
antigens (from pathogen) on membrane. - Helper T cell receptor binds to antigens &
is activated (release cytokines). - Activated helper T cell divides quickly
(mitosis- clonal expansion) and forms
clones of genetically identical cells. - Cloned cells respond to the pathogen in
different ways-
Stimulate more phagocytes 🡪 more
phagocytosis
Develop into memory cells 🡪 quicker
response for secondary infections
Stimulate B cells to multiply & release
antibodies
activate cytotoxic T cells
6
Q
what do cytotoxic t cells do
A
bind to infected cells
perforin makes holes in infected cells membrane and enzyme enters
infected cell is destroyed
