define amaurosis fugax?
temporary loss of vision in one or both eyes due to a lack of blood flow to the retina
amaurosis fugax etymology?
amaurosis - dark
fugax - fleeting
what sign of carotid artery stenosis can be heard on auscultation?
what does it actually sound like?
why does it happen?
Carotid bruit
blowing or whooshing sound/ like a murmur
turbulent blood flow probably because of some partial blockage
pt had TIA.

main thing you want to rule out here in terms of cause?
AF
pt had TIA.

what things are you checking?

Hba1c, lipids, clotting screen, INR, glucose, Na+.
pt had TIA.
you send to TIA clinic.
what Ix are done here?
MRI head or carotid doppler

how quickly do you refer to the TIA clinic?
within 24 hours
if TIA occurred in the over a week ago,
how quickly do you refer to the TIA clinic?
within 7 days

what is drug do you give acutely?
- name
- strength
when would this drug be contraindicated.
Aspirin 300mg immediately
aspiring CI if: any bleeding disorders on warfarin or heparin
