Euthyroidism, MI, thyrotoxicosis
What do we tell our pts to avoid while taking levothyroxine?
Caffeine (stimulant), narcotics (CNS depressant), OTC
When do we tell our pts to take levothyroxine?
30-60 min before breakfast
How long do our pts take levothyroxine for?
Life long, does not cure but treats

How do we dose elderly for levothyroxine
Start low and go slow

Why do we give proplythiouracil?
Treat hyperthyroidism
What is the action of proplythiooracil?
Inhibits production of thyroid and conversion of T4 to T3
What are the side effects of propylthriouracil?
Bradycardia, dizzy, HA, N/V, leukopenia neutropenia, heart failure, edema
Who is proplythiouracil not safe for?
Children, liver toxic
When treating older adults for hyperthyroidism, what do we prefer to give?
Radioactive iodine, it kills /destroys thyroid tissue
What are we monitoring when administering PTU?
CBC, AST/ALT, bp/hr, weight
