Hyperlipidemia Flashcards
What drug class is artovostatin in?
Statins
What is the action of statins?
Decrease LDL, VLDL, Triglycerides
What is the pharmacokinetics of statins
First pass effect in liver, decrease drug bioavailability, metabolized by CYP450 enzymes
Why do we give statins
CAD/CVD, stroke prevention
What are the SE’s of statins?
Myopathies (muscle soreness due to rhabdomylosis,) hepatic dysfunction (elevated LFT’s,) N / constipation, HA, rash
What pregnancy category - is statins?
X
When do we ask our patients to take a statin? Why?
We ask them to takeit at night with evening meal because liver synthesizes cholesterol at night
What drug class is fenofibrate?
Fibrates
What is the action of fenofibrate?
Increase 02 to fatty acids to decrease hepatic production of triglycerides and VLDL
Why do we give fenofibrate?
We give it to treat high triglycericles (hypertriglyceridemia)
What are the SE’s of fenofibrate?
GI discomfort/D, gallstone formation
What are the contraindications of fenofibrate?
Previous gallstone formation, hepatic/renal disease, cirrhosis, persistent liver function abnormalities
What is the patient teaching of fenofibrate? Why?
We ask them to take with foodo because it increases absorption
How long does it take for fibrates to reach therapeutic range?
1 month
What enhances the effect of fibrates?
Warfarin
