What drug class is mylanta in?
Antacids, sodium bicarbonate
What is the action of mylanta
Reacts with HCL to produce neutral, less acidic, poorly absorbed salts to increase ph of secretions
What is mylanta used for?
Peptic ulcer disease, GERD, gastritis, heart burn, GI bleeding
What are the contraindications of mylanta?
Appendicitis or inflamed bowel disease, renal failure
What are side effects of mylanta
Constipation (sodium) diarrhea ( magnesium )
Hyphosphatemia and osteomalacia
When do pts take my Mylanta
Take 1-3 hrs before meal or bedtime
Antacids = antimixing w/other meds, why?
Decreases absorption
What drug class is omeprazole in?
PPI
What is the action of omeprazole
Irreversibly binds to proton pump inhibitor and prevent pump of gastric acid into stomach lumen
Blocks final step of acid products
What is omeprazole used for?
Heart born, peptic ulcer disease, stress ulcers, GERD, zollinger Ellison disease
What are the 3P’s?
Prevent holes
Possible gi infections
Porous bones
What tests do we conduct when giving PPI’s
Dexa scan
What are the side effects of ppi’s?
Osteoporosis, porous bones, N/V/HA
When do we administer PPI’s
before food intake
What drug class is Cimetidine in?
H2 inhibitor
