What drug class is donepezil?
Acetylcholine cholinesterase inhibitor
What is the action of donepezil?
Increases acetycholine in brain by inhibiting metabolism
Slows neural degradation of Alzheimer’s (55 weeks)
What are side effects of donepezil
Breathing problems: asthma, COPD and fainting
Sick sinus syndrome (heart disease), bradycardia, heart block
Trouble urinating, seizures
What do we monitor when administering donepezil?
CBC and bleed time
What are the contraindications of donepezil?
Cardiovascular and lung disease
When do we administer donepezil?
bedtime
How long does donepezil to peak?
3-8 hrs.
What drug class is sumatriptan in?
Triptans
What is the action of sumatriptan?
Binds to serotonin receptors to dilate cranial blood vessels
Why do we give sumatriptan?
Migraines, ha pain with or w/o aura
What are the se’s of sumatriptan?
CBS changes, dizzy, ha, anxiety
Aterations in bp, chest pain, shock
What is contraindicated in using sumatriptan?
Cerebro/ peripheral vascular disease
Older adults
What is a pt teaching for sumatriptan
No alcohol
When do we not administer sumatriptan?
Why?
Within 24 his of ergots
- risk of MI
- elevates BP
What drug class is diazepam in?
Benzodiazepines
What is the action of diazepam?
Enhances GABA
Why must we be cautious when administering diazepam?
- Schedule IV drug, highly addictive
Why do we give diazepam
Antianxiety, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant reasons
( depression, psychosis, mania)
Prevents delerium/agitation in pts withdrawing from alcohol
What are the side effects of diazepam?
How long do they take to present
CNS depressing, depressed mood with SI, decreased libido, bladder control
Restlessness
Take 2-3 days to present
How many days does it take diazepam to reach a steady state?
What do we tell our pt
3- 7 days
Do not stop abruptly
