Thrombotic Agents Flashcards
How do we get rid of intravascular clots
dissolved by the fibrinolytic system by plasmin
What is plasmin
nonspecific serine protease
What does plasmin do
it digest fibrin and other plasma proteins, and some coagulation factors
What can inhibit plasmin (endogenous) and how does it work
alpha-2 antiplasmin; it forms a stable complex with plasmin- blocks 50% of plasmin
Where does plasmin come from
plasminogen (inactive form)–a single peptide bond is cut and turns into plasmin
How is plasminogen activated and how do does this work
by thrombotic agents; dissolve pathological thrombi and fibrin deposits at vascular sites
What is the difference between fresh thrombi and aged thrombi
recently formed thrombi easily lysed old thrombi (72 hrs) more resistent
Which type of thrombi is easier to lyse
venous thrombi (slow flowing blood)
What are thrombotic agents used for indications
used to dissolve clots in patients with MI
thrombotic stroke
pulmonary embolism
What is a down side to using these types of drugs
toxic and can lead to hemorrhage
