- Hand hygiene! Use gloves!
- Use kidney bowl for gathering things.
- Find the correct punction site (7.–8. or 8.–9. intercostal space).
- The punction site must be clipped and cleaned.
- Preparation: remove the vacuum system of the butterfly needle, attach the butterfly catheter
to the three-way extension line, attach the syringe. - Penetrate the skin, subcutaneous tissue and muscular layer. Make sure the hand holding
needle rests against thoracic wall. - After penetrating turn the needle parallel to the wall.
- Open the three-way extension line and aspirate.
- Close the three-way extension line before removing the syringe.
- Repeat aspiration. NB! Make sure the three-way extension line is closed correctly.
- Before removing the needle close the valve towards the patient.
- Remove the needle and place a clean swab on the puncture site.
