- Hand hygiene! Use gloves!
- Use kidney bowl for gathering things.
- Prepare everything so it is easy to grab things with one hand (prepare the syringe with saline,
label the syringe, place the tape roll somewhere handy).
- Clip the hair.
- Clean the punction site with antiseptic. Do not spray on the patient, use swabs! Let the skin
dry before placing the catheter.
- Do not touch the punction site after cleaning it!
- Make sure the iv-catheter is functioning (open the package, bend down the wings, remove the
cap, make sure the needle is moving).
- Place the catheter on clean surface (for example the package of the catheter).
- Keep the cap on clean surface!
- Tighten the tourniquet. Do not keep it tightened for too long!
- Fixate the vein with your fingers and place the catheter. Place the cap on the catheter.
- Release the tourniquet as soon as the catheter is in the vein.
- Fixate the catheter using tape.
- Flush the catheter with saline.
