Intubation and extubation Flashcards

1
Q

Endotracheal intubation

A
  1. Hand hygiene! Use gloves!
  2. Use kidney bowl for gathering things.
  3. Prepare everything so it is easy to grab things with one hand (cut the gauze, prepare the
    laryngoscope).
  4. Prepare 3 different sizes of endotracheal tubes, check the cuffs!
  5. Make sure the tubes stay on clean surface while checking them (kidney bowl).
  6. Check the depth of anaesthesia (palpebral reflex, swallowing).
  7. Check the depth of the tube.

> NB! Do not place the tube against the patient!

  1. Use lubricant spray.
  2. Intubate the patient using laryngoscope. Fixate the tube with gauze and inflate the cuff.
  3. Untie the gauze, check the depth of anaesthesia and

> DEFLATE the cuff before extubation!!!!

Extubate.

Dangerous mistake! The cuff is not deflated before extubation (moving a tube with an inflated cuff will
injure the trachea) !!!
