Drawing up medication, injection Flashcards
1
Q
A
- Calculate the correct amount of medication based on the given information.
- Hand hygiene! Use gloves!
- Use kidney bowl for gathering things.
- Choose the right size syringe and needle (it is not practical to take 0,35 ml of medication in a 2
ml syringe,
> do not use a pink needle for i.m injections on a cat and dog etc).
- Check the date on vials! Do not use drugs that are not valid.
- Label reusable vials with opening date.
- Use alcohol swabs to wipe the neck of glass ampoule or rubber cap of the vial.
- Follow safety rules, do not cut your fingers with glass (use swabs, tissue paper etc).
- Open syringes and needles correctly, do not break through packages.
- Keep syringes and needles on clean surface (kidney bowl, package of the syringe).
- Take the correct amount of medication.
- Cap the needle after removing it from the vial. Always keep the needle covered, also during
the removal of air bubbles. - If you need more medication after removing the air bubble, use the same needle and syringe
to take more. If there is too much medication in the syringe, do not put it back to the vial (you
can drip exess medication on a tissue paper). - Change the needle for s.c and i.m injections if you penetrated rubber caps.
NB! Do not forget
to pull back the plunger to empty the needle!
- Do not forget to label syringes!
- Choose the correct method and area for injections. Check the label for information about the
allowed method (i.v, i.m or s.c). - Follow the rules of aseptic while administering the medication i.v. Keep the area around the
catheter clean, do not place needleless syringes on contaminated surfaces (use a kidney bowl). - Do not forget to aspirate before administering the medication s.c and i.m (to avoid getting the
medication into a blood vessel).
Dangerous mistake! The medication is administered by a method that is not allowed.
