THORACIC AND LUMBAR Flashcards
What does the head of the ribs articulate with?
With the body of the thoracic vertebrae
What does the tubercle articulate with?
Articulates with the transverse process of the vertebrae.
How does the rib shaft connect?
Connects anteriorly to sternum via costal cartilage
What type of joint is the intervertebral Joint and what joint movements are there and what ligament?
Solid joint, little to no movement. Intervertebral disc is the ligament
What type of joint is facet joint and which movement
planar joint, sliding/ gliding
What type of joint is covertebral joint and costotransvers joint
Planar joint, sliding and gliding
What does the head of each rib articulate with
superior costal facets ad transverse process of its corresponding vertebrae AND intererior costal facets of the vertebrae superior to its corresponding vertebrae.
What type of joint is the sternocostal joint and which movement and what kind of connectivge tissue does it contain?
Planar, sliding/ gliding, contains costal cartilage.
Where does costal cartilage connect to on Ribs 1- 7
costal cartilage connects directly to sternum
Where does costal cartilage connect to on Ribs 8-10
costal cartilage connects to sternum via rib 12’s costal cartilage
What is thoracolumbar fascia and what does it act as?
a layer of thickened fascia that covers the deeper muscles of the back. Acts as a key attatchment point for many of the back and core muscles.
What happens during inspiration
Skeletal muscles move the rib cage up and out to allow for lung expansion. Ribs move in a bucket handle motion. Diaphragm also increases thoracic volume by compressing abdominal viscera allowing for increased lung expansion.
What happens during expiration
skeletal muscles move the rib cage down and in during forceful exhalation to force air out of the lungs. The ribs move in a bucket handle motion. The diaphragm moves up back into its resting position.
