Thermo Dynamics Flashcards
First law of thermo dynamics
Energy is not created or destroyed; it only changed forms
Second law of thermo dynamics
The entropy (disorder) of the universe is always increasing
Example of entropy
More energy dispersal = more entropy
Why does heat flow from hot to cold?
Entropy
Third law of thermodynamics
A perfectly crystalline solid at absolute zero has an entropy of zero
Fórmula for entropy
Entropy = S (Jules/Kelvin)
It is not an measure of energy itself, but of how energy is dispersed within a system
Gibbs free energy (G)
Tells us about the spontaneity of a process (meaning it will happen on it’s own)
G = H - TS
Enthalpy (H) measure of energy
G = change in energy - change in entropy (S) and temperature
Negative means spontaneous, positive is no spontaneous
