Theory of Planned Behaviour Flashcards
What is the Theory of Planned Behaviour
A theory to predict and understand behaviours relating to exercise
Where did the theory of Planned action evolve from
The theory of reasoned action
What did the Theory of reasoned action suggest
If we INTEND to do something we are more likely to do it
What are behaviours immediately affected by
Intention
What 3 factors determine if intention will be followed by action
Attitude, Subjective norms, perceived control
What are the 2 parts of attitude
Affective- will it be fun, enjoyable
Instrumental - is it beneficial or not
Explain attitude
Is the action perceived as favourable or not (positive)? What are their beliefs about the action.
Explain subjective norm
What your network think, beliefs family, work, friends how these influence your decision
What are the 2 parts of Subjective norm
Injunctive - do others support or not? Descriptive norms. Do others in your network do this activity or not
Explain perceived control
How easy or hard it is to follow through with exercise intention. Perceived barriers or not?
What are the 2 areas of Perceived control
Are they capable(self-efficacy) and have control to overcome possible barriers and challenges?
Give exercise positive example
I intend to, I believe its good for me(attitude), all my friends and family train (subjective norm) and the gym is cheap and accessible(control) so I am more likely to go
Summarise the Theory of Planned Behaviour
Intention is important but a more positive attitude, subjective norm and perceived control lead to more likely to follow through with intention
